Relationship between the artist ‘’Yuichi Mori’’ and ’Hon inbo’’ through Mt.Atago

 from Gifu Newspaper

One artist lived in the forest where Honinbo makes a Hanko

There was an artist in Mt. Atago (hereinafeter ‘here’). His name is ‘’Yuichi Mori’’(hereinafter ‘Mori’). He was a painter and poets, and he really had lived here.

When Mr. Douchi (Peter Spielberg, hereinafter ‘Peter’) began to look after here 3 years ago, he heard of the artist from the neighbor. He searched for information about how Mori lived here, but he couldn’t find any documents about him. About 3 years later, one man who read local newspaper’s article about Peter’s activity here contacted him and told that he knew Mori’s grandson. Thanks to the man, Mori’s grandson visited to tell Peter about how Mori made a living here. It’s been about a half century since he left here.

Yuichi Mori was born in Mugegawa-cho that’s located neighbor to Mino city, and he spent his later years(1898-1984) on painting and poetry here. These arts had been hobbies for him for long years, but at 50 years old, he began to study Japanese painting under Mr.‘’ Saneatsu Mushanokoji*1’’ who was very famous Japanese painter, that could be said a Mori’s debut as an artist. Mr.‘’Santoka Taneda*2’’ who was also very famous Japanese poets said ‘’Mori was my best friend’ and often visited his home and made poetries about Mori’s painting works.

Mori’s grandson said,‘’There were so many painting materials and tools here, and Mori usually traveled around Japan and made his works everywhere he visited. He also fasted for a creation.’’

The neighbor who saw Mori in his life said, ‘’He had long beard enough to touch the ground, so he was like a Hermit.’’

The Workshop in Mt.Atago forest

from Gifu Newspaper

I found my color in the forest!

The Workshop of color pencils making was held in Mr.Atago, and 5 families enjoyed making their only one pencils in the world.

Participants chose trees they would use as a pencil material, and cut by themselves. And they made a diameter 8mm hole by a special drill, then inserted their favorite color core into the hole. As a final process, they rode on a special chair made for wood curving and enjoyed touching with raw wood through curving.

The youngest participant who was 3 years old also tried making her only one color pencils with her mother, and when she finished, she was so happy about her works.
